farther是什么意思（farther 和 further）

在许多人眼里,“Farther” 和“further”的意思是一样的。但是在某些情况下，我们还是还是需要区分一下这两词的。特别是在学术写作和正式写作中，用词的精确性至关重要。

Farther (Physical Distance)

虽然这两个单词越来越被混用，技术上来讲， “farther”是用来描述现实物理上的距离的。例如，我们会说：

The library is farther down the road from here than the post office.

图书馆离这比邮局更远。

在这里，作为“far”的比较级，“farther” 就只是单单意味着“更远的距离” 。同样的还有“farthest,” 意思是最远的物理距离。

Further (Metaphorical Distance)

那么 “further” 又有什么不同呢？当同样描述物理距离时，它俩没有什么区别。所以，我们也可以说：

The library is further down the road from here than the post office.

图书馆离这比邮局更远。

在这里，”Further”和“farther” 是一个意思，可以互换。

不同的是， “further” 也可以用做比喻或者用来形容非物理距离。

例如，如果我们要形容某事发生在更晚的时间，我们就必须要用“further”了：

Proofreading happens further along in the publication process than editing.

在出版过程中，润色工作在编辑工作后面。

同样, “further” 也可以用来指价格的升降程度，或者我们读书的进程：

Before you read any further, stop and reflect on the themes in this chapter.

在你读更多之前，先停下来仔细想想这章的主题。

“furthest”则是用来描述虚拟的最远距离。 这种比喻性的用法也可以用来代指额外的，就比如我们常说的 “further study.”

注意，在以上所以情况下，用“farther” 都是不对的。

Farther or Further?

一个好消息是“further” 可以用于以上所有情况。事实上，如今“farther” 的使用越来越少见，正如下图所示，所以用“further” 是最保险的。

但是如果你想要确保在学术写作和正式场合中没有用错词的话，还是很有比较记住它俩的区别的。

Remember:

Farther = At a greater physical distance

Further = At a greater figurative or non-physical distance
